Aging in Place

Lighting, Flooring, and Hardware for Aging in Place

Lever handles, brighter even lighting, and non-slip floors.

What we do in one visit

  • Lever handles. On every door in the house.
  • Grab bars. By the toilet, in the shower, and at the entry, anchored into blocking.
  • Brighter, even lighting. More fixtures, higher output bulbs, and fewer dark corners.
  • Night lighting. Low lights along the path from bedroom to bathroom, on a motion sensor.
  • Rocker switches and easy-reach outlets. Switches at 42 inches and outlets at 18.
  • Non-slip flooring. Replacing loose rugs and slick tile with textured flooring, and fixing the transitions between rooms.
  • Handrails. On both sides of every stair.

Common questions

What is the first thing to change in an older parent's house?

Lighting and handles. Brighter light in the hall and bathroom, lever handles on the doors, and grab bars by the toilet and shower remove the most risk for the least money.

Where should grab bars go?

Beside the toilet, at the shower entry, and beside the shower seat. Each one is anchored into solid blocking, not just drywall.

Which flooring is best for aging in place?

Textured vinyl plank or matte tile with small grout lines. Both are non-slip and easy to clean. We also remove throw rugs and fix uneven transitions.

Can this be done without a remodel?

Yes. Everything on this page is done inside the house you have, most of it in one visit.
